🥱 is the yawning face: eyes squeezed shut or half closed, mouth stretched wide. It arrived in Unicode in 2019. Before that, people leaned on 😪 (sleepy face) and 😴 (sleeping face) for tiredness. A yawn can come from exhaustion or from boredom, so the emoji carries both messages at once, and when it is aimed at someone else’s message the second meaning usually wins.
How it’s used
- Early mornings: “Monday, 6:45 a.m., my eyes won’t open 🥱”
- After a late night: “Stayed up way too late finishing that series 🥱”
- Boredom: “Two hours into this meeting and I’ve learned nothing 🥱”
- Reviews: “The first half of the movie is a snooze 🥱”
- Going to bed: “Okay, I’m calling it a night 🥱”
On the tiredness scale, 😪 is the teary sleepy look, 😴 is fully asleep and 😫 is worn-out misery. 🥱 is “sleepy plus a little bored,” which makes it the everyday emoji for the simple, ordinary yawn.
Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world
In English, “yawn” is itself a verdict: calling something “a yawn” or “a snooze” is shorthand for “boring.” The emoji often appears with “boring,” “meh” or “wake me up when it’s over,” with a slightly sarcastic tone. Among friends it is also just the light “too early for this” sleepy sign-off.
In Korean, it is paired with 하암~ or 졸려 and most often means plain sleepiness around school and work. Alongside words like 노잼 (“no fun”) it turns into a mild critique of whatever you are reacting to. People like to joke about how yawns spread from person to person, and this emoji fits that joke well.
In Japan, the emoji is called あくびした顔, and it pairs naturally with 眠い and the sound ふあぁ. It is common after overtime, exam study or on a commuter train in the morning. There is a boredom reading as well, but people tend to express it indirectly, through sleepiness, rather than saying outright that something is dull.
Where it gets misread
- Posting 🥱 under someone’s carefully written message or presentation can be taken as “this is boring,” not “I’m sleepy.”
- In a meeting or class chat, it can make you look unfocused.
- It can be mixed up with 😮 (open-mouthed surprise) or 😱 (screaming). The closed eyes are what mark it as a yawn.
- Unlike 🙄, which is eye-rolling irritation, 🥱 is about drowsiness and dullness, not annoyance.
Design differences by platform
All versions are a yellow face with a wide-open mouth and narrowed eyes, but they differ in whether tears are drawn at the eyes and how the inside of the mouth is shown. Apple’s expression is lively with a hint of moisture at the eyes; Google’s Noto is simpler with a big open mouth; Microsoft’s Fluent has soft volume; Samsung’s tends to be more exaggerated. Depending on how large the mouth is drawn, yawning and surprise can look rather alike.
