A grinning face with stars for eyes meaning “wow,” “amazing” or “I’m obsessed.” It expresses awe, excitement and fan-style admiration, and reads as dazzled rather than in love, unlike 😍. Read the guide

🤩 is a wide-open grin with both eyes replaced by yellow stars. It arrived in Unicode 10.0 in 2017, making it one of the newer faces, and its name comes from the idiom “star-struck,” the dazed thrill of seeing a celebrity in person. The core feeling is admiration so strong your eyes light up: something is incredible, better than expected, or you are looking at someone you idolize. People call it star eyes, starry-eyed, the wow face or the excited face.

How it’s used

  • Awe: “That new music video is unreal 🤩”
  • Fan moment: “Saw her in person 🤩🤩”
  • Anticipation: “Vacation starts tomorrow 🤩”
  • Showing off something cool: “New laptop just arrived 🤩”
  • Praise: “Your presentation was incredible 🤩”

Set it next to 😍 and the difference is clear: heart eyes say “I adore this,” star eyes say “this is spectacular.” Pointed at a person, 😍 can read as romantic while 🤩 reads as fandom or respect, which makes 🤩 the safer choice. It also differs from 😲, which is neutral surprise; 🤩 is always positive.

Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world

In English it travels with “OMG,” “amazing,” “iconic” and “I’m obsessed,” and it is a standard reaction to celebrities, concerts and product launches. The original meaning, being dazzled by a famous person, still fits best, but day to day it works as an intensified “so excited.” Brand accounts and marketing copy lean on it so much that some users feel it has a slightly promotional flavor.

In Korea it pairs with exclamations like 대박 (amazing), 미쳤다 (insane, in a good way) and 와 진짜 (wow, seriously). It is everywhere in K-pop fandom, especially with the word 영접 (“receiving an audience,” used jokingly for seeing an idol in real life), and in shopping reviews. It is also a comfortable way to compliment a friend’s photo, and at work it has become the safer option over 😍 for praising a colleague’s results.

In Japan the name 目が星の笑顔 (smile with star eyes) connects to 目がキラキラ, the manga convention of sparkling eyes, so it was adopted easily. It appears with 尊い (precious), 最高 (the best) and 憧れ (admiration), and it is a staple of 推し (favorite idol) culture. As in Korea, it lets you gush about a person without implying romance.

Where it gets misread

  • Swapping it for 😍 changes the message. To someone you are not dating, 🤩 says “you’re impressive,” 😍 says “I’m into you.” Keep the distance with 🤩.
  • It never fits sad or serious news. It is strictly for positive surprise.
  • Sarcasm (“Monday morning meeting 🤩”) works, but only with text. On its own it will be taken at face value.
  • It overlaps with 🥳 but the excitement is different: 🥳 celebrates an occasion, 🤩 admires something. Use 🥳 for birthdays.

Design differences by platform

Apple gives it large, bright yellow stars and a wide-open mouth, the most intensely thrilled version. Google’s Noto uses slightly smaller stars that cover the whole eye area, for a cleaner, more cartoon-like look. Microsoft’s Fluent stars have depth and the mouth is rounder, closer to a gasped “wow!” Samsung’s stars sit a bit larger than the eyes and the smile curves high, making it the giddiest of the four. The star eyes are unmistakable everywhere, so the meaning holds across devices.
