Birthday Emoji Ideas: Combos for Friends, Partners and Your Boss

Copy-ready birthday emoji combos for friends, partners and bosses, plus no-cake combos with a little style and the emoji to avoid in birthday messages.

In a birthday message, the emoji are the first thing people notice. The same "Happy birthday" can come across as playful, warm or polite depending on what you stick on the end.

This page collects combos you can copy and paste, sorted by who you're writing to. Hit the copy button next to a combo and it goes straight to your clipboard.

The basic set: safe for anyone

The four most popular birthday emoji are 🎂 (birthday cake), 🎉 (party popper), 🎈 (balloon) and 🎁 (wrapped gift). They work no matter who you're writing to, so when you can't decide, just pick two or three of them.

When a bunch of people are posting birthday wishes one after another in a group chat, swapping out even one emoji from the message above yours shows a little extra effort.

For friends: over the top is welcome

With close friends, a little too much is fine. Emoji with a face or a pose, like 🥳 (partying face), 🤪 (zany face) and 💃 (woman dancing), can make you look even more excited than the birthday person.

Between friends, it's also natural to drop emoji into the middle of a sentence, like this iMessage or WhatsApp text: "Finally🥳 It's your day🎂 Go do whatever you want today💃"

For partners: let the warmth show first

A birthday message to your partner should show your feelings before the party. Put an affectionate emoji like 🥰 (smiling face with hearts) or 💖 (sparkling heart) next to the cake, and the celebration and the love arrive together.

If it's the first message of the day, sent right at midnight, fewer emoji and a longer message will read as more sincere. One or two emoji at the very end is plenty.

For bosses and clients: restraint is good manners

In a work relationship, it's safest to skip emoji or keep it to one or two. A single 🎂 or a 🎂✨ is fine, and it's best to avoid face emoji.

The most natural approach is to write a proper sentence and add one emoji at the very end, like "Happy birthday! Wishing you good health and a wonderful year ahead🎂" In a team Slack channel, matching the level everyone else is using also works.

Combos without the cake

On a day when everybody is posting 🎂, a slightly different combo stands out. These borrow just a little of the birthday mood with candles, flowers, coffee and dessert.

🍰 (slice of cake) feels more everyday than 🎂, so it's a good fit when you want to check in lightly, like "It's your birthday, did you get any cake?"

What to avoid: jokes that only work between close friends

💀 (skull) is often used these days to mean "I'm dead" from laughing, but in a birthday message it can read as a joke about being old or about to die. Skip it unless you and the person already trade jokes like that.

How to make age number emoji

You can show an age by chaining the number keycap emoji 1️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ together. For example, thirty is 3️⃣0️⃣ and twenty is 2️⃣0️⃣.

Depending on the device, number keycaps may show up as a number inside a box or as plain digits. If the other person uses a different kind of phone, check how it looks before you send.
